Top Movies for the Holiday Season 2013

This holiday season is primed for some of the years top movies—whether you’re into romance, action, comedy, or anything else, there’s a movie for you this holiday season.  Here’s a preview of some of the most hyped top movies for the holidays this year!

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

The second installation in The Hobbit series, directed by Peter Jackson (who also directed The Lord of the Rings trilogy), is set to release December 13th of this year.  This movie has already received lots of publicity, and is one of the biggest releases of the year.  This comes a year after the release of the first Hobbit, which was a highly successful film—this one will certainly be the same.

In this movie, Bilbo Baggins and his band of dwarves are on a mission to reclaim the Dwarven kingdom of Erebor from the dragon Smaug.  We will see the return of many great characters including Gandalf and Thorin, as well as new characters such as Tauriel (played by Evangeline Lilly) and Smaug (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch).  We also see a familiar face from The Lord of the Rings—Legolas (played by Orlando Bloom) makes his appearance in this film, tying the two trilogies together.

 Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues

Almost ten years after the release of Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, there is finally a continuation to the hilarious story of Ron and his news team.  This one leaves the 70s behind, bringing us to Ron’s smashing success in the 80s, where he takes on New York’s first 24-hour news program.  Along with Will Ferrell as Ron Burgundy, Paul Rudd returns as Brian Fantana, Steve Carell is Brick Tamland, and Christina Applegate is Veronica Corningstone.

Also featuring in this movie is Liam Neeson, Harrison Ford, and Jim Carrey—these stars will only improve the greatness that is Anchorman.  If you aren’t doing anything on December 20th, I recommend going to see this one.

 Saving Mr. Banks

Fans of Mary Poppins will be excited for this release—this is the story of the author of Mary Poppins, P.L. Travers (played by Emma Thompson), negotiating with Walt Disney (played by Tom Hanks) over the film adaptation of her novel.  I personally got very excited by just watching the trailer once, and I know I will be going as soon as I am able (it releases December 20th).  The all-star cast includes Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson, Colin Farrell, and Paul Giamatti.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

I first saw the trailer for this one quite a while ago, and I was incredibly excited to see it.  The storyline is fantastic, and even though I’m not a huge fan of Ben Stiller, he seems to be portraying a different role than his usual.  Stiller plays Walter Mitty, a man who constantly daydreams until one day he embarks on a journey that will change his life forever.  The cast includes Kristen Wiig, Sean Penn, and Adam Scott, and looks to be one of the most visually stunning films of the year.

This Christmas season is a great time to go see a movie with your family—there are tons of fantastic movies set to release in the next month.  A great gift for the holidays are some tickets to these and other great movies coming out during the holidays!
