The “Material Girl” Madonna has apologized for using the word nigga in an Instagram photo of her son Rocco Ritchie.
The comment in question on the Instagram post read:
“No one messes with Dirty Soap! Mama said knock you out!” along with the hashtag “#disni–a.”
“I am sorry if I offended anyone with my use of the N-word on Instagram,” the singer said in a statement on Saturday, Jan. 18. “It was not meant as a racial slur…I am not a racist.”
She added: “There’s no way to defend the use of the word. It was all about intention…It was used as a term of endearment toward my son who is white. I appreciate that it’s a provocative word and I apologize if it gave people the wrong impression. Forgive me.”
The comment as quickly deleted but by that time the damage was already done. The mother of four — daughters Lourdes, 17 and Mercy, 8, and sons Rocco and David, 8 — was immediately met with outrage from fans who found her caption offensive. “MADONNA U NEED TO TAKE UR arthritis medicine instead of trying to be hip on the internet,” one user wrote in response.
After deleting the photo, Madonna in typical Madonna provocative style wrote, “Ok let me start this again. #get off of my d–k haters!”
In early January, the pop singer provided just enough scandal while documenting her holiday skiing trip with her kids in Switzerland. Madonna instagramed herself posing with her underage (in America) son and a bottle of gin in Switzerland (where the legal drinking age is 16), alon with the message “The party has just begun! Bring it! 2014,” she wrote.
The 55-year-old singer is no stranger to controversy and this no doubt will just be added to historical archives of controversial Madonna moments quickly forgotten and forgiven.
